BE YOURSELF

Every known/common/familiar surrounding is blinded out, even the phone is switched off.
Instead of the high frequencies of the vibes of modern city life,
the ocean is rippling. From all directions.
The sun is just shining.
You feel this slight eastern breeze on your sweaty skin.
No rush, no pressure, no need to be ready right in time.
At this point,
you realize that you ARE.
And you are able to only focus completely on your self.

This is achieved with no drugs and no dancing nude around the fireplace.

The Island:

4 acres of natural land on a coral reef. 6 miles away from mainland. 3 miles behind the great barrier reef. 95% vegetation, mostly bushes, shrubs and mangroves, a view trees. The ground exists of white coral pebbles or swamps, these may be flooded at high tides.
The southern tip, where CozyCabin is situated, is sand and corals and mostly ??? by an easterly breeze, which keeps the bugs away and gives a refreshment even on hot summer days.

The History:

The Blue Ground Range, a couple of mostly uninhabited mangrove islands, is situated 2/3 way from mainland to the outer reef. Fishermen from mainland has been using these islands as base camp for fishing in the deep grounds out of the reef. The plans and licenses for building a resort with ample accommodations have been in the drawer, but (fortunately;-) it never came to realization. The current owner wants to keep the island natural with rustic elements in honor to the reefs natural reserve.

The Outlook:

Belize gets more and more attractive for tourism. The small remote fisher villages get more and more modernized, influenced from the States and resorts got build in every corner. This brings labor to the locals and more cars, smart phones, televisions and Chinese plastic garbage...
Same with the islands. (Eco) resorts got built overall, the islands are loosing their original character.

The Surrounding:

The neighbor islands are extremely multifaceted. The closest one is a fishermen island, built only out of empty conch shells, with some small wooden huts on it. These local fishermen still harvest and sell their conchs and lobsters on the mainland for their living. This caye is not even registered in the cadaster of Belize.
The over next island is owned by a European business man. He only lives part wise in winter season in 4 big houses and a restaurant. The island is maintained over the year by caretaker teams, who are full time present. This caye is estimated worth 3 Mio USD.

The Wildlife:

In the mangrove swamps little fish get bread, birds like fish-eagles and herons have their nests, pelicans spend their winter season. Lizards, geckos and iguanas, constrictor snakes, Hermite crabs, who sometimes find funny housings in plastic lids, fulfill the bush with colorful life.
Around the island in the shallow waters, the reef fish are breeding, millions of juveniles attract bigger fish like all kind of snappers and jacks. Huge rays, tarpons and permits can be spotted from the walkway. In the deeper waters, but still in reach, Dolphins and Manatees are frequently passing by.

The Pig:

Piggy came to the island with his female cousin when they where 5 days old. His fellow did not make it and he was nursed by the owner with a milk bottle. Females usually stay together, but male pigs divide from the rout with 2 years and become lone fighters. Piggy is now 3 years old.
Piggy is used to humans, they are his family. From his nature he is always in a good mood and thinking positive. He is very sensitive and reflecting the humans character and mood. If he gets pushed, he pushes back, if he feels relaxation in his opponent, he is relaxed.

The Main House:

The big wooden house is built on posts and hidden in the mangroves. It was renewed in 2014. It has a solar system, which needs assistance, 9.000 liters of water storage, water pump, solar- and tools-shed. The living space is about 800 ft², the well equipped kitchen with dining/living room is fit out with fridge/freezer and an electric oven. There is a sleeping and bath room at the same level and additional sleeps on the attic.

The Cozy Cabin:

The little wooden hut is situated at the south eastern beach and used to be the caretakers hut. It offers a comfortable queen sized bed, a little kitchen area with two flame butane stove, a little bibliotheca, a small solar system for lights only, candle light, basic kitchen tools, table, 2 chairs, 2 plates pots and pans...
The outside area is surrounded by a massive fence and contains Piggy protected plants like aloe vera, coconuts, pineapples planted in composted seaweed and a boat with vegetable plants.
The bathroom is a separate little structure with saltwater closet and out-of-the-bucket shower. To the cabin belong two water tanks.

The Saloon:

Built out of the remains of the ancient restaurant, which was pulled into the sea by Hurricane Earl in 2016, this structure serves as Piggy free space with a bar, big table with up to 9 seats, possibility of table barbeque. It has no roof, as it rains very rarely out here on the islands.

The Owner:

She bought the island and lived here same years, improving and preparing the whole island and its structures for welcoming guests in a natural and unique way. While being here, interacting with the locals, she realized how special this place would be. She left the place 2016.

The Caretakers:

We are a 49 years old artist couple from Germany. In Europe, we have organized and carried out big art projects in empty standing buildings for over 20 years. Our work was always closely connected to our audience. In our exhibitions the visitors could navigate through at least 10 to 20 different room installations with video, sound and illumination effects. The works gave occasion to have a critical view on themselves and their current situation of life, but also a view for the whole, the politics and economics.

The Guests:

Since 3 years we have been living on the island and hosting guests. In the first year, we had mostly young couples as guests, which showed us the potential of this place. We changed our advert for the winter season 2018 and invited people to experience pure off-the-grid life in a pristine, natural surrounding, together with a free living pig. A fishing line, a spear, a kitchen and a bed, some candles and the sky full of stars. To being alone with mother nature. Nothing more. This was a tremendous success.

The vision:

Our and the owners financial means are used up. Currently, the island is for sale. If someone would buy it who would think economically, had to fill the swamps and build at least 10 buildings to regain his investment. This would be the death of all our endeavors and intentions.
To prevent this, we would need somebody, who could buy or rent the island with a non profit purpose and allow us to improve our project. If we had some resource to make the project more known in special quarters and attract some professional customers, like actors, managers or sportsmen, we could get it on a level where we could work close to economically. But we still don't want to run it commercially. The island should stay like it is and rented only to one party.
Any support, also in form of recommendation would be welcome.
